Richards![]() ![]() For the past twenty years, Richards has taught an interdisciplinary seminar on resisting injustice with NYU University Professor Carol Gilligan, which led to publication of two of their books- Darkness Now Visible: Patriarchy’s Resurgence and Feminist Resistance (2018) and The Deepening Darkness: Patriarchy, Resistance, and Democracy’s Future (2008), and he has taught as well an interdisciplinary seminar with the psychiatrist James Gilligan on retributivism and manhood and its relation to violence in the plays of Shakespeare, leading to their current work on a book, Shame and Guilt in Shakespeare. A teacher of criminal law and constitutional law at NYU School of Law, David Richards is the author of over 20 books and numerous articles, and has developed influential arguments on decriminalization and toleration as a key constitutional value gay rights (his work on gay rights was prominently cited in the recent Indian Supreme Court opinion recognizing gay rights), and the distorting impact of patriarchy on interpretation in law and religion. ![]()
